Welcome to UHC Sparkasse Weißenfels
Weissenfels is a lovely city in central-Germany, located about 40 kilometres from the metropolitan areas of Leipzig and Halle. It has a population of approximately 40,000 people but it is rich of history and culture. Famous German philosophers, poets and musicians such as Friedrich Nitzsche, Heinrich Schütz, Georg Friedrich Händel and Johann Sebastian Bach have either lived, worked or died here and thus shaped the cultural life in our region over the centuries.
Floorball History in Weißenfels
Weissenfels has become a centre of sports over the course of the last decades. Handball and basketball were the main disciplines that Weissenfels was known for in times of the GDR. Likewise, many athletes started their sport careers in Weissenfels and have thus increased the city's reputation. Andreas Hajek from Weissenfels, for example, won two gold medals in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. However, it was not until the reunification of the divided west and east German parts that floorball started to gain ground in our lovely city. It was the Swedish "floorball pioneer" Carl Ahlqvist (owner of the company UNIHOC) who visited Weissenfels in the early 1990ies and, symbolically speaking, brought something that he considered to be a little "plant" that needed to be taken care of. He found a group of enthusiasts who took that "plant" and made it flourish over the course of the last 25 years.
In the beginning of its development, floorball was played by many teams only as a warming-up exercise. However, a couple of floorball-addicted teenagers practiced several times every week. A couple of years later, this group of people founded the first real floorball club in Weissenfels in 1999... UHC Sparkasse Weissenfels was born. Being a founding member of Germany's floorball "Bundesliga" and winning most of the national championship titles, one can say that UHC Sparkasse Weissenfels plays a fundamental role in the German floorball scene. Nowadays, the club has more than 350 members, mostly kids, young men and women who practice regularly and compete as licensed floorball players in various junior tournaments, regional and national leagues.
The men's team has achieved 13 German champion titles and 8 Cup victories. The lady's team has been German Champion 7 times and has won 5 Cup finals. The junior teams have won several regional and national titles throughout the current years.
Concept and Philosophy
Both men’s and women’s Bundesligateams are representatives of our club. They are expected to perform well and, at the same time, function as role models for our junior teams. Even though Floorball is an amateur sport, the board's obligation is to provide best possible conditions for all the players. Since the 2003-2004 season, our men's team has been strengthened by international top level players from all over Europe, mainly from Sweden, Finland, Switzerland and Czech Republic. Those very experienced and highly skilled players have been functioning likewise as trainers and coaches in the clubs's juniors education and have been passing on their knowledge and tricks. Some say that this is one of the secrets behind UHC's story of success. Hosting several IFF events in the past (world championships U19 men in 2001 and 2011, final round of the Euro Floorball Cup in 2004) as well as the annual international Sparkassen-Cup has led to close cooperations and partnerships with a number of well known floorball clubs all over Europe. As a result of this, our club has always had a leading role in the floorball development in Germany. Many UHC-players have been nominated for the national squads and represented the German colours in various international competitions and world championships.
